Interaction with Sound & Music – Interaction Design Focus (IT-University in Göteborg, 2005)

In 2005, I was a guest lecturer at the Interaction Design project course, HCI / Interaction Design programme, at the IT-University in Göteborg, Sweden (Head of the course: Dr. Olof Torgersson).

During the first semester of the IT-University’s Interaction Design master programme, the students are taught the skills required to be able to work with interaction design in a society where computational technology pervades most aspects of our lives. The main goal of the interaction design project course is to put the pieces together, provide a greater intellectual depth and to further practice design through a large project.

Within this course, my lectures were meant to give the students an overview of the topic of sound-based interfaces in general and of the field of interactive music in particular, including the evolution of the user interface in this specific field. The lectures aimed to make them reflect over the interaction design issues specific to sound-based interfaces (both tangible and non-tangible), for example how to apply rapid-prototyping methods on applications for everyday life based on sound, as they were used to form-based design. The lectures included a large amount of audio-visual material about design examples, and in-depth discussion about cases studies. These were combined with a micro-controller programming tutorial (control of a Pd patch with sensors), and hands-on exercises that consisted of design sketching of sound-based applications for everyday life, their rapid-prototyping and presentations in front of the rest of the class. As a complement to the lectures, tutorial and exercises, I compiled a database of literature, projects, and other relevant information about the topic that I made available on a resource website made specifically for the course. My powerpoint slides are also available on the website.

Lectures outline

Part I

  • Properties of sound for interaction design
  • Interfacing with sound: types and examples
  • Electronic music: historical background and alternative controllers
  • Hands-on: design sketching and short presentations

Part II

  • Design methods, with Tooka and Sonic City as case studies
  • Technology:
    - Technology for interactive sound applications
    - Simple tools for rapid prototyping
  • Hands-on: simple prototyping of design sketches and short presentations
